2023 Super Tuscan
2023 Super Tuscan
Description
VARIETALS. 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, & 5% Syrah.
VINEYARDS. Sangiovese from Machado Creek Vineyard in Morgan Hill, with Merlot and Syrah from Dorcich Vineyard in Gilroy.
WINEMAKING. Inspired by the celebrated Super Tuscan wines of Italy, this blend reflects the balance and complexity of the 2023 vintage. Abundant winter rainfall, followed by a cool spring and mild summer, allowed the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving their natural acidity. Sangiovese provides brightness and structure, complemented by Merlot’s rounded richness and Syrah’s depth and spice. The wine aged for 24 months in 75% French and 25% American oak, with 50% new barrels. Bottled in August 2025, it rested in bottle for over a year before release. The first Picchetti Super Tuscan was produced in 2001, and has since been a favorite amongst the Pantling family.
TASTING
Aroma: Aromas of black cherry, raspberry, and ripe plum layered with toasted oak, cigar box, brown sugar, and warm baking spices.
Palate: Rich and layered, with velvety tannins framing black cherry, plum, and raspberry. Toasted oak and buttery pie crust add warmth, while crushed-rock minerality carries through the lingering finish.
FOOD PAIRING. Enjoy with fall favorites such as Thanksgiving turkey with herb stuffing, roasted butternut squash with brown butter & sage, or Red wine-braised short ribs over creamy polenta.
