This dry-farmed, gnarly, head-pruned ancient vine Zinfandel is a classic example of what low yields, high quality fruit and minimum intervention in the wine-making process can accomplish. Planted by the Picchetti family in 1882, this tiny one acre parcel was the very first to be cultivated on Montebello, and continues to produce a small crop of exceptional grapes every year. The 2015 growing season saw mild temperatures and below average rain totals, bringing lower than usual fruit yields with intense flavors. Hand-harvested via three passes through the vineyard, this limited-production vintage was barrel-aged for 3-years in French oak (50% new barrels). It is richly flavored and beautifully balanced, with an exotically perfumed bouquet that displays dark berry liqueur, potpourri, smoky oak, and an appealing hint of freshly cut grass. Robust black raspberry and boysenberry flavors become brighter and spicier with air, revealing a delightful floral nuance that interlaces with the supple tannins to support an extremely long finish. It is very drinkable now, and we fully expect this delicious wine to improve through 2025. Pair it with everything from spicy BBQ foods, your favorite Italian fare, aged Parmesan cheese or an elegant Chateaubriand. Bellissimo!
