Picchetti subscribes to the notion (popular in Chardonnay's spiritual home of Burgundy) that oak, applied deftly, can round out and enrich a wine without interfering with its natural fruit character. And it's easy to see why this hedonistic golden-hued vintage (from our Montebello Estate vineyards) has been described as a "white wine for the red wine connoisseur". The grapes were hand-picked, whole-cluster pressed, and the juice aerated and racked to barrel (75% new French Oak) for 15-months, with full secondary malolactic fermentation and aging sur lees for the first 6-months. It was filtered with just one pass, promoting a voluptuous mouth feel and rich creamy flavors. The nose opens with a fresh bouquet of honeysuckle flowers, dried apricot and pineapple, accompanied by notes of butterscotch and that distinctive chalky minerality unique to the Montebello terroir. Subtle hints of vanilla and crème fraîche add complexity and depth, and zesty flavors of citrus, pear and stone fruit fill the palate and resonate on the prolonged finish. Enjoy this sophisticated, multi-layered wine with creamy pasta dishes, pan seared scallops, grilled shrimp or fresh Dungeness crab with drawn butter. Ooh la la!
