Vino di Vicino translates from Italian to Wine of the Neighborhood in English, and this latest vintage is made up of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, (70% from the lofty heights of Leslie’s Montebello Estate and 30% from the Arastradero Vineyard, a small 1-acre parcel located right on the grounds of Stanford University’s School of Medicine) and 10% Petite Sirah (from the Bellicitti Ranch in Saratoga). Each lot was vinified and barrel-aged separately in French Oak (54% new barrels) for 28-months, and then blended prior to bottling. This luscious full-bodied wine garnered 91 points and was awarded Best of Class of Varietal at the 2018 California State Fair. It displays a luxurious bouquet of seasoned cedar, mulberry and sweet leather, with layered flavors of preserved black cherry, cocoa powder and olive tapenade, framed by judicious toasty oak, vanilla and espresso notes, with silky tannins that linger through an extended finish. Pair it with grilled Portobello mushrooms, Kobe-style beef, filet mignon or your best Prime Rib roast. It is drinking beautifully already, but the integrated tannins and balanced acidity should permit it to mature gracefully through 2028.
