Tempranillo (pronounced tem-pra-NEE-yo) is the basis for the world-renowned Rioja wines of Central Spain. Many of California's wine-growing regions are too hot for this fickle grape which is prone to sunburn and bleaching, but the Hamond Vineyard, enjoys similar climatic conditions to those found in the Iberian Mountains of La Rioja - cooler temperatures to maintain acidity, but warm enough to develop the sugars required for full flavor development. This vintage was aged for 18-months in French oak (46% new barrels), taming the beast within, and permitting its unique characteristics to shine through. Creamy smoked paprika, complex oak notes, with dried fig, boysenberry, and red fruit spice. It is deliciously approachable right now, but the balanced acidity and dryness from the tannins will permit this medium-bodied wine to mature in the bottle through 2028. Have fun pairing it with Santa Maria tri tip, Manchego cheese or a variety of Spanish tapas. ¡Feliz año nuevo!
